Boca Negra Canyon

"Two possible hiking areas. I am part of New Mexico walkers. So we use the steep trail and walk the open space area. When we finish. I like to hike The petroglyphs trails. There's a nice restroom. A number of sheltered picnic areas flatter trails as well as more steep terrain trails. The area is well maintained. Petroglyphs are limited and unfortunately Representatives of the younger generation have managed damage the area with their graffiti. Fortunately, this is limited to rock scrapings and not paint at this juncture. Hopefully the graffiti. Destructionists don't continue to damage the area. There are some birds in the area. Unfortunately, the housing area of Albuquerque has encroached close enough to the trail that a lot of wildlife is no longer visible. Housing is incorch to the top of the hills as well as against the petroglyph lands. It's too bad Albuquerque isn't more interested in preserving and protecting these areas. They are allowed the same to happen on the Sandia and montano ranges"

"We love this place! It is a slightly challenging climb, but the reward of viewing petroglyphs up close is worth it. It's a great little secret on the edge of Albuquerque."

"The trail was ok, but I think I was expecting more. I enjoyed the canyon to the north significantly more. This is made up of 2 smaller loop trails. One basically climbs the side of the hill. The other is flatter that hugs the parking lot. Nothing wrong with either trail, I just think there are better trails in the park."

"Moderate hike to the top. It is steep and rocky. The petroglyphs at the bottom are roped off but beware of vandalism. Good way to spend an hour or so..."
