Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area

"This is a beautiful area for hiking, riding and camping. There are miles of trails through beautiful country in this preserve and lots of dispersed camping opportunities for capable vehicles. We stayed at the free Cave Canyon Campground. There are 5 or 6 primitive sites and a nice clean pit toilet. The dirt road in is pretty good, I think all but the lowest big rig could get in. There are even garbage cans, so if you stay here make the extra effort to leave your campsite cleaner than you found it. There are lots of us out here camping in the boonies and if everyone did that it would make a huge difference! "We’re at the Jagger campground BLM. This is one of many BLM campgrounds that’s well maintained, has water and electric along with a dump station. The views are beautiful."

"Really cool place to visit if you have the whole day put aside. It's a little bit of a drive but worth it, the historical sites are in very good shape and there is a lot of room for exploration. You can go inside of many of the old buildings, though they vary from abandoned to having period appropriate furnishing; which also varies because the Fort was has been in use since 1855). Since it is such an open exhibit, please be kind to the old buildings, the staff works very hard to keep everything in good shape."

"Cool but in a low key way. Really great drive into the area and nice higher elevation weather. A conglomerate of buildings centered, loosely, around a central square. A ton of history of use for nearly two centuries. To really enjoy it, get your AI to give you an overview of it's history and then create a guided walking tour. Pay attention to the architecture and changes."
