Howard "Pappy" Litch Park

"Pappy Litch Park in Galena, Kansas takes its name from Howard 'Pappy' Litch (1906-1996), a respected local businessman, historian, and community figure. Litch once owned a garage and service station on this very site and later founded the Galena Mining and Historical Museum, which still operates just around the corner. Set along Main Street on Historic Route 66, the park serves as both a community gathering place and a roadside attraction. The block, once home to Litch's garage, was donated in 2001 by the Galena Chamber of Commerce and local residents to honor his legacy. Today, visitors can admire murals that recall the look of a vintage garage, step inside a historic jail cell, rest in a shaded gazebo, and view the original 1952 Will Rogers Highway plaque, relocated here from the Missouri-Kansas state line. Though modest in size, the park offers a meaningful stop that blends local history with Route 66 nostalgia, giving travelers a chance to pause and connect with the story of a man devoted to preserving Galena's heritage. It was a very quiet spot on a late November morning but I have no doubt that it's busy during warmer months."
