Route 66 Open Space

"Nice little spot on the outskirts of Eastern Albuquerque. Multiple trails crisscross the place. A lot of hills so be prepared for some exercise. Not suitable for those who can't handle steep terrain with loose rocks. Otherwise a great exercise spot. The hills guarantee a good cardio. The day I discovered it the lot was full and it was a windy day. I saw mountain bike use and some hikers who were obviously geared up for a longer hike. Sign says no camping. Down by the little stream there are fantastic large boulders grouped together. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of graffiti on them. Otherwise the place was pretty clean. Being so close to town makes this a real gem right next to the highway."

"This place has a clean and well maintainted parking area. There are multiple hiking trails that weave around through rocky hills and down into sandy arroyos lined with beautiful cottonwood trees (mixed with saltcedar and russian olive). My family and I encountered a gopher snake, deer tracks, bobcat scat, and my dog sniffed out a dead skunk, so there is quite a lot of wildlife. I thought this area would be more trashed because of its proximity to the city, but it is fairly clean, some trash in the arroyos, a dump site with an old vehicle and another with roofing materials. Native plants; winterfat, broadleaf milkweed, saltbush, cottonwoods, prickly pear, and grama grasses. The milkweed plants were flowering (early July) and they were covered with tarantula-hawk-wasps and butterflies. My kids loved observing the state insect, from a distance!"

"This is a great Trail to hike into some of the Tijeras Hills. As others have mentioned this is a spot was formerly an amusement park called Little Beaver Town. The gate is locked but you can hike passed it."

"The park is great however there is a homeless camp among the trees next to the parking lot with garbage scattered around. It no longer feels comfortable to leave your vehicle in the parking lot while you go hiking for a few hours."

"Not a bad place for a walk, although parking off the noisy access road is not ideal. Trails were squishy and slippery which was fun for the dog, less so for human."
