Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

"Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is such a nice, low-key escape. The scenery is beautiful in a very natural way, rocky mountains, open fields, and big skies everywhere. It’s also super easy to encounter bison here,they roam freely, and seeing them up close is pretty awesome. We even spotted some longhorns casually wandering around too. It’s a great place for an easy hike, a scenic drive, or just hanging out by the lakes. Not too crowded, not touristy, just peaceful and refreshing. Perfect if you want to get out of the city and enjoy some quiet time in nature without doing anything too intense."

"We loved staying here for our short stay! Absolutely beautiful. Our site, 51-B, was nice and located next to a lake with a trail right from the site. Lots of wildlife: ducks, birds, deer and elk. The deer came right up to our area. We also saw several within the park, as well as elk. Would go back and spend more time for sure."

"Such a unique place! During my last visit we saw deer, elk, bison, and long horns. The history shared at the visitor center is fun, and the hiking trails a great! Be cautious that even easy trails have quite a bit of rock and elevation, but if you can handle a bit of a rock crawl, the views are atunning."

"This is my favorite place to hike. My friends and I regularly drive in from Texas to go day hiking here because the views are stunning! There are so many trails to choose from, and each trail has it's own beautiful picturesque rewards. You won't have cell service so make sure you stop at the Visitor Center first for all the information you need. Speaking of, the Vistor Center is also amazing! The bathrooms are always clean. The people are always friendly, and it has an awesome little museum to give you an idea of the beauty and wildlife you may encounter while on your hike. This place is amazing, and has quickly become a piece of my heart. I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs to get away from hustle and chaos of life."

"I would never have guessed it going in, but Wichita Mountains turned out to be one of my tip-top favorite places to hike across my entire cross-country road trip!! The nice thing about this place is that its various hikes can pretty easily cater to a wide variety of hikers: from those who just want to see some absolutely gorgeous scenery in a super-serene environment while sticking to prescribed official trails... all the way to the most adventurous of hikers always looking for off-shoots, side-scrambles, and other ways to take their hikes to the next level! I visited in late April and personally felt that the mountains were at their prettiest during the last few hours before sunset: when the contrasting colorscape between the (green) plants, the flowers that were starting to bloom, and the (red) dirt and gravel had me stopping to appreciate/photo literally around every other corner! Add to that the relaxing serenade of both birds and crickets at that time of day, and a few solid sunsets reflecting off the water, and it was pretty darn close to hiker's heaven out there! I will add that, at least when I visited, even the official trails were a bit overgrown here and there (which I did not find fun), and often involved a fair amount of rock stepping and occasional river crossing (which I did find fun), but for anyone willing (or better yet, eager) to tackle that, the 5 star feast for the eyes around every turn is a payoff that is SOOOO worth it!!"
